Beach Cookout

On the 3rd of the 4th of 2019 Ruma Waru and Ruma Tahi walked down to Karoro beach next to
Watsons Creek by the Tasman Sea. We were down there because it was one of our tasks for the
William Pike challenge (WPC). Part of our challenge was to make a safe fire and to cook meals on the
fire.

A few days before the challenge we watched a video on how to make a safe fire. The video included
materials such as tinder, kindling and thick sticks. The video told us to make the fire in a pyramid
shape. It said to put tinder down to start the fire.

At the beach we got into our groups. In my group there was Me, Dakota, Nathanael and Summer.
Our group supervisor was Tim. We then went and found a spot to make a fire. We dug a small hole for
the fire. We placed big rocks around the fire and went to collect tinder and kindling plus bigger sticks
for later. We then put tinder down and then kindling in a pyramid shape.

I walked over to Mrs Kemp and asked her for the matches. She said, “ Yes, sure, here you go.”
I got to light the fire. I carefully pulled out some of the tinder and lighted it. Me and Nathanael blew
on the fire to make it ROAR!!!! Our fire grew so big that it was just above our waists. While Dakota
and Summer prepared the lunch, me and Nathanael took care of the fire.

We were having tati fry for lunch and pancakes after. I went to grab some dry tufts of grass for tinder.
We keeped on loading bigger and bigger sticks until they were about the size of my arm. We waited
until the sticks transformed into ashes and the ashes turned into embers. There was a lot of heat to
cook a lot of meals. We put the pan with tati fry in it on the embers. It started to sizzle.

We all took turns at stirring the stuff in the pan around while Nathanael cut up the potatoes.
Dakota added the potatoes to the pan and I did the same to the water. The water started to bubble
straight away, that means there is a lot of heat.  Once the tati fry was done Dakota gave a fair share to
everyone. I placed a few more logs on to the fire to keep it going. The tati fry was so good.

Once we finished it we made the pancake mixture and put it on the pan. We all got at least
one pancake. When we finished our pancakes we packed up and put out the fire with Watsons creek
water and with some sand. We then walked up to school and had a play. I really enjoyed the beach
cookout. I can’t wait to go again!!!
