If I Were Principal For A Week

If I were Principal for A week the changes I would make would be:

1. I would make lunchtime longer because lunchtime goes really fast when you are having fun.

2. I would make the playground more big because I would love to see something new.

3. I would add rugby posts because it is fun to kick the ball over the post.

4. I would install a basketball court because people that play basketball would need to get used to the hoop so they can shoot better.

5. I would put more bag hooks in Ruma Waru because it is annoying for year sevens to put thier bags on the ground all the time.

Basketball Animation

Today we learnt how to make a slideshow loop around and never end. To do it you need to go to HTML and insert your link in there. Then change the places that say false to true and the 3000 to 100 then go to compose.

Ski Instructor

Ski Instructor

Ski instructors are high earning people and have a fun job. Although the
job is very hard work and not all of the time you are a ski instructor.

A ski instructor either teaches people how to ski or they help people improve
their skiing skills. They also check that the mountain is a safe environment for
skiers, snowboarders and staff. They alternate between different jobs.
For example, one day they might be a ski instructor and the next day they
might be bar staff.

How much you earn as a ski instructors depends on where you work and
your level of experience. A level 1 ski instructor can earn about $18 per hour
and a level 2 instructor can earn about $31 per hour.

In conclusion, a ski instructor is an amazing job and can earn a lot in a day.
If your into skiing and you're looking for a job, you should apply to be a ski
instructor. After reading about this I highly recommend a ski instructor as a
job.

Colony Collapse Disorder

 What Is
Colony Collapse Disorder?

Success Criteria:
We will plan and then write an information report on a topic of our choice related to bees.

Our report will:
  • Be interesting!
  • Give information about a topic of our choice related to bees.
  • Show a clear link to our planning.
  • Start with an opening statement about our topic.
  • Have at least 3 paragraphs.  Each paragraph will have an opening statement
  • and a series of facts related to that statement.
  • Include some complex or compound sentence structures.
  • Include at least one diagram, photograph, illustration or map to go with the text.
  • Finish with a general statement about the topic.
  • Use information from at least 3 different sources.  This information will be written
  • in our own words and we will write down our sources at the end of our report.

Colony collapse disorder (ccd) is killing bees. Bee hives have been abandoned.
There were 5 million hives in 1988 but only 2.5 million today. These are the three main reasons why
ccd is killing bees.

Chemicals is a big problem. In 2015 in the USA, the insecticides like neonicotinoids
were used on about 95% of crops and flowers. Pests came along and died but so did bees.
They came along and picked up the poison and took it back to the hive and all the bees in the hive died.
Neonicotinoids harms the bees nerve system.

Image result for dead beeMites is also a problem. Female mites go into the hive and get into the bee larvae cell
and suck out the fat out of the bee larvae and weakens them although they still have enough
strength to break out of the cell. Then the male mite comes along and weakens them too.
They also give the bees viruses which leads to bad wings and other disabilities.

Global warming is a big problem too. Humans can live in different types of temperatures
but bees can not. Bees must live in a certain type of temperature of else they will die. Because
global warming is warming up Earth's atmosphere, bees die because it is not the temperature
it is used to.

Without bees, humans and many other living animals would die. Bees add $15 billion to the
USA economy. Bees are the most important animal in the world.

Callaghans Ridge

Callaghans Ridge

On the 11th of April room 1 and 8 went to tramp the Callaghans ridge track.
We drove to Kumara Junction and turned left at the roundabout. In my car Dad
was driving and the passengers were me, Mackenzie, Sasha and Xavier.

When we got to the entrance to the track some people drove to the end of the
tramp to park cars there and came back in other cars. We got into our groups
for the scavenger hunt. My group was me, Daniel and Aimee. On the walk we
decided to stay at the back with Ms Kemp, Daniel’s dad (Glen) and
my dad (Angus). The track was uphill a lot of the way. When we
stopped, me, Daniel and Aimee got to go in the front of the line.

When we were halfway we stopped and made a shelter in our school teams.
My team was me, Dakota, Nathanael, Summer and Jaxon. We used a
tarpaulin and some rope. We put the rope in the holes in the tarpaulin and
tied it to a few trees on the top of the bank. That was our shelter. Then we
ate our lunch. I had bacon and egg pie for lunch. It was yummy. Then we
packed up our shelters and continued walking.

After a while of walking (four hours!) we came into a clearing.
We were near the end. We walked and ran for a while and came
out to the end. We met at a picnic table and talked a bit about the walk.
Then we got into the car and drove back to school. I really liked the tramp.
I am going to go again with my family one day.

Marae Visit

Beach Visit At The Marae

On Tuesday Ruma Tahi and Ruma Waru went to the Arahura Marae.

We were walking down to the beach in our sneakers. It was a 5 minute
walk to the beach. When we got to the beach we had a sculpture competition.
I got in a group with, Daniel, Phoebe, Korban and Summer.

We made a waka out of wood and stone. I found a log that was stuck in the
ground so I called Korban and Daniel over to help. We were all like grrrrr to
get it out. When we got it out we celebrated.

I then added that stick to the front of the boat. Korban found another stick and
we had the whole group trying to get it out. When we got it out we celebrated
again. We stuck little sticks around the sides of the waka to be the walls.
We used huge sticks as the floor. We didn’t finish (sadly).

We then walked back up to the Marae. On the way I picked up my argillite
rock that I found at the river. That was my trip to the beach OVER.

Beach Cookout

On the 3rd of the 4th of 2019 Ruma Waru and Ruma Tahi walked down to Karoro beach next to
Watsons Creek by the Tasman Sea. We were down there because it was one of our tasks for the
William Pike challenge (WPC). Part of our challenge was to make a safe fire and to cook meals on the
fire.

A few days before the challenge we watched a video on how to make a safe fire. The video included
materials such as tinder, kindling and thick sticks. The video told us to make the fire in a pyramid
shape. It said to put tinder down to start the fire.

At the beach we got into our groups. In my group there was Me, Dakota, Nathanael and Summer.
Our group supervisor was Tim. We then went and found a spot to make a fire. We dug a small hole for
the fire. We placed big rocks around the fire and went to collect tinder and kindling plus bigger sticks
for later. We then put tinder down and then kindling in a pyramid shape.

I walked over to Mrs Kemp and asked her for the matches. She said, “ Yes, sure, here you go.”
I got to light the fire. I carefully pulled out some of the tinder and lighted it. Me and Nathanael blew
on the fire to make it ROAR!!!! Our fire grew so big that it was just above our waists. While Dakota
and Summer prepared the lunch, me and Nathanael took care of the fire.

We were having tati fry for lunch and pancakes after. I went to grab some dry tufts of grass for tinder.
We keeped on loading bigger and bigger sticks until they were about the size of my arm. We waited
until the sticks transformed into ashes and the ashes turned into embers. There was a lot of heat to
cook a lot of meals. We put the pan with tati fry in it on the embers. It started to sizzle.

We all took turns at stirring the stuff in the pan around while Nathanael cut up the potatoes.
Dakota added the potatoes to the pan and I did the same to the water. The water started to bubble
straight away, that means there is a lot of heat.  Once the tati fry was done Dakota gave a fair share to
everyone. I placed a few more logs on to the fire to keep it going. The tati fry was so good.

Once we finished it we made the pancake mixture and put it on the pan. We all got at least
one pancake. When we finished our pancakes we packed up and put out the fire with Watsons creek
water and with some sand. We then walked up to school and had a play. I really enjoyed the beach
cookout. I can’t wait to go again!!!

Lake Daniell

Lake Daniell

On Wednesday the 12th of June Room 1 and 8 went to Lake Daniell for a day tramp.
We went for a challenge in the William Pike challenge and to know about hypothermia. We travelled
in car groups to Lake Daniell. My car group was me, Mackenzie, Dakota and Brighid. The driver was
Phaedra Robins. The drive was extremely boring. When we got to the start of Lake Daniell we got our
gear out of the car and then we had a talk with Ms Kemp. When we started the walk me and Daniel
decided to stay at the back of the line with Glen and Ms Kemp. Glen used to work at DOC so he knows
a lot about the bush. He taught me and Dan about the Beech forest there and about where the
long tailed bats live.

About one quarter of the way through the walk Glen told me to try pepper wood. So I did.
I crunched it up into a ball and ate it. In the olden days it was used to numb peoples mouths. It was
so spicy. You are not supposed to swallow pepper wood but I accidentally did!  On our first stop Ms
Kemp put me and Dan at the front of the group with Erin. Erin is a very fast walker but so are we.

When we got to the hut we walked out on the jetty and looked in the water we didn’t see any fish (sadly).
Then we sat down and had lunch. I had a huge bacon and egg pie for lunch. It was delicious! Then we
packed up and walked back. On the way back I collected pepper wood for my car group to try. When
we got to the end I tried to get my car group to try the pepper wood but they all knew what it was. Then
we packed up and drove home. We got home at 6:00 pm.

I loved that walk and can’t wait to go again!

Thunderstorm

We had to write about a thunderstorm. Here is my work:

WALT use adjectives and similes to describe a setting clearly

Example

Lightning never strikes twice, does it?
That was the question that occupied their frightened minds as they
crouched, huddling together, next the pile of dusty sacks in the base of the windmill…

   PLANNING!

What sounds could you hear during a thunderstorm? Loud noises.
What can you see? Absolutely nothing.  What are your feelings? Happy.
Are you touching anything?  The air. Are there any smells? It smells dusty.
You might be able to think of some onomatopoeia. Boom, crash, wobble.
Could you write a short paragraph describing what it would be like to be caught
in a storm, using some of your ideas from above?

There were loud noises banging on the stony windmill door. I pushed the door ever
so slightly that I could see what was outside. Boom, crash, wobble. It was a huge
thunderstorm!! I saw the windmill starting to turn the wood was breaking. I cried and cried.
It took me ages to build this beautiful thing. The grey stones were falling apart.
The roof fell down. Luckily I didn’t get hit. I whipped outside
and prayed for Zeus to stop this. He didn’t listen. I was pulled up by a tornado. I couldn’t
see the windmill oh wait it was above me. Ha ha ha that is funny. I was being dragged up
to space. I screamed, ahhhhhhhhhhh. There was absolutely no noise it was pitch black.
Zoooom, a spaceship came to rescue me. I climbed on board. It smelt dusty when I was
inside. The lights turned on. I walked over to the pilots seat. Who was driving, no one.
I sat in the pilots seat and wondered how to drive this thing. It shouldn’t be to hard
I thought. I flicked a switch, pulled a lever and… there was the autopilot button. I hit it
and put in some coordinates and flew back to earth. When I was in the sky the ship
ran out of fuel. It couldn’t get worse I thought and then it did. The ship was struck by
lightning and was falling to the ground. I grabbed a parachute and jumped out. When
I landed on the ground It was a sunny beautiful day with no cloud in the sky. I turned
around and saw my windmill in perfect shape. Huh that’s odd I thought.

This term we have been learning about Maraes. My friends and I did a stop motion animation on poroporoaki. Here is our work:
