Cycle Ride

 Cycle Ride

On Wednesday 22nd of September Room 8 biked on the Wilderness trail from Milltown to Kapitea Reservoir for a William Pike Challenge.

The day before we had to check we were properly equipped for the cycle ride. We arrived at school at 8:00 in the morning and then we loaded the bikes on to cars. My bike went into Donna’s horse float. I was in a car group with my Dad, Donna, Billie H, Olive, Cooper and Breanna. On the way there Billie and Olive were watching and listening to music while me and Cooper were blocking our ears.

When we got to Milltown we unloaded the bikes and started making our way to the first stop, Cowboy’s Paradise. The first part of the bike ride took a lot of effort for some people because it was uphill for a while. Ms Kemp said that people had to show leadership so me and James went at the back to help people that were struggling. That first part of the ride would have been very hard for Matt and Hamish because they were on a tandem and there were really sharp corners.

When we got to Cowboy’s Paradise some people did skids to stop and this grumpy guy came out and started swearing at us not to skid. When me and James arrived there everybody was shouting at us not to skid so we just did some sick stoppies instead. Some people had a toilet stop and got a drink and some food.

Then we got going. Ms Kemp put the girls at the front and the boys at the back for some reason. We had to go behind the tandem and it was really annoying because there were lots of corners and it was uphill. There were a lot of stops because they struggled to get around some of the corners.

The next stop we had was at this random place right next to the water way where a big truck came through so we had to get to the side of the trail. After that we kept on going on the trail. Later on the trail we meet up with Scott, Poppy, Warren, Justine and Robin. Then we continued on biking.

Later on the trail there was some downhill and I was going really fat and then there was a switchback. I didn’t see it until I was really close to it so I just slammed on my brakes and I took my right foot of the pedal and planted it on the ground and turned around it. James said it looked pretty cool.

The next stop was Kawhaka Intake for lunch. We got there and I sat down and ate lunch. In my lunch I had bacon and egg pie, a muffin, a muesli bar, an OSM and some fruit. It was pretty good.

From there we biked to Kapitea Reservoir which was fun. When we got to the Kapitea Reservoir Tyler, James, Nathan and I went to go help Jack PSK who was at the back and was having a hard time doing the rest. When we got back we loaded the bikes on the cars and drove back to school. Then I biked home.

Lake Daniell

Lake Daniell

On the 9th of september room 8 went to Lake Daniell in the Lewis Pass for a spring tramp and a William Pike challenge. The day before the tramp our class discussed what hypothermia is and what leave no trace is. We read stories about people getting lost and dying in the beech forest at Lake Daniell. In the beech forest it was very easy to get lost because everywhere looked the same.

The day before the tramp I prepared all of my gear. In the morning I packed all of my gear and then went to school. When I got to school Ms Kemp checked that I had a rain jacket. I was in the car with Ms Kemp, Jack, Ethan and Xavier. We then traveled to Lake Daniell. We had a stop in Reefton to stretch our legs. Then we were back on the road. After that we put a cd in the radio and listened to some rock music, it was very loud and rad. It wasn’t a very good drive from there because there were so many hills and it made me feel weird.

When we got to the start of the Lake Daniell walk we got all our gear on and started the walk. On the walk I kept a look out for rotten trees that Long Tailed Bats nest in. Ms Kemp said that the trees have markers on them that aren’t orange or white. I found two rotten trees that had holes in them with sticks and mud on the bottom of the nest, those trees had blue markers on them.

When we got to Kohanga Atawhai (Manson Nicholls Hut) we sat down and ate our lunch. I had noodles in a thermos and some other stuff with that. We then packed up and signed the visitors book and then left. On the walk out I nearly fell off a cliff because Bamton pushed me.

When we got back to the start me and Nathan found a rope swing and swung on it. Sadly Nathan told everyone and then there were lines for it. Me, Nathan and Tyler tried to swing and land in the creek. I got 10cm away from it and Tyler landed on the dirt in front of it and lost his footing and sprained his ankle and went to hospital the day after for an x-ray. We decided to leave after that.

Then we sat down and thanked all the adults and everyone who helped with the tramp. After that we got into cars and drove back to Greymouth.
